Emergency aid for Sierra Leone mudslide victims – 2017

In August 2017, Sierra Leone experienced one of the deadliest natural disasters in its history when devastating mudslides and severe flooding struck the outskirts of Freetown. Hundreds of people lost their lives, thousands were displaced, and entire communities were left searching for shelter, food, medical care, and hope.

During this critical time, I had the privilege of serving as a guest speaker for the Sierra Leone Association of Windsor (SLAWO). The event brought together members of the Sierra Leonean diaspora, local leaders, and community supporters who shared a common goal: to stand with those affected by the tragedy.

In my keynote address, I emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and encouraged individuals, organizations, and community groups to respond quickly. The disaster highlighted how important it is for diaspora communities to remain connected to their countries of origin, especially during times of crisis. By raising awareness and encouraging collective action, we helped mobilize support for families who had lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods.

This moment marked one of the earliest demonstrations of HFNG’s commitment to humanitarian response. It reinforced our belief that meaningful change begins when communities come together with compassion, leadership, and a shared sense of responsibility.

The response to the Freetown mudslide became more than an emergency appeal, it was a reminder that solidarity knows no borders. It strengthened relationships within the diaspora, inspired greater civic engagement, and laid the foundation for HFNG’s continued mission of responding to humanitarian needs and supporting vulnerable communities wherever help is needed most.

As HFNG continues to grow, the lessons learned from the 2017 Sierra Leone mudslide remain at the heart of our work: respond with urgency, lead with compassion, and empower communities to stand together in times of need.
